This half completed costume has moved across the country with me several times, and has seen a lot of shit. She was finally completed thanks to my wonderful Bree Hive contributors. Read the story below!
I started this cosplay in early 2015. I was super into Hearthstone and just getting in to cosplay at the time. Annoy-o-tron is a Taunt with Divine Shield, with an Attack of 1 and Health of 2. Hence the well-suited name. The low cost, hard to kill early game Mech was a STAPLE in my deck for most of 2015. I still play the card occasionally for sentimental purposes.
I found the design adorable and decided I wanted to make it as my first big cosplay project. At the time there was only one other cosplayer I could find who had done the annoying robot. I even asked some more experienced cosplayers on advice to make the head. Basically all I had completed was the head was paper mache'd in 2015 and various materials were collected.
In 2016, I even applied for a $5000 grant from my local city and pitched the costume as an "Interactive, Wearable Art Project." Obviously I was denied, but I do love my effort. It was actually a really good pitch and when I asked for feedback, there was none. So I either slipped through the cracks or just lost out by a bit which is crazy to consider.... The nine page application was extremely thorough. Pictured below is the design I had submit for the grant.
Fast forward FOUR years, and SIX moves later, Quarantine struck. I was determined and motivated to clear out some old projects. Before stores officially shut down, I was able to pop in to Party City and purchase the FINAL supplies I needed for this cosplay!!! Everything I needed was chilling at home.
Fast forward another month. Procrastination is my second favorite hobby and for some reason I kept putting this off. Was it because this project was the start of my cosplay journey and completing it would mean the end? Or was it perhaps because I was afraid I wouldn't do it justice to my original design?
ENOUGH. June rolled into July and I had had enough. I hopped on The Bree Hive with a very special announcement; ANNOY-O-TRON WOULD BE FINISHED THIS MONTH, OR EVERYONE GETS A REFUND. My long time followers were just as excited as I was. So of course I procrastinated one more week but then I hopped to it.
After a few hard working weeks, Annoy-o-tron was coming together and I was so happy. TBH I was really excited to be experiencing "con crunch" again. I even preemptively booked my photo shoot on July 31 with Richard.
I finished the cosplay on the 29th before bed, did a test fit and some TikToks on the 30th, and after a few small adjustments she was ready to shoot!!! I am incredibly ecstatic about this. What a freaking journey. It came out as good as I had pictured, and the TikToks were so fun - one even semi-blew up! Give me a follow if you're on the app!
The shoot with Richard was as fun as always. He has such a great eye for photography and because he does it for fun, you can always feel that energy when you look at his work. I'm so happy he was down to shoot my annoying robot. He even had the idea to incorporate some confetti to match the splash art!
I'm so incredibly happy and excited to finally finish this. On to the next thing I suppose!!!
